Village of the Municipality of Faenza, situated south-west of the city.
Description: Archaeologists have found traces of extremely ancient human settlements in the area near Colle di Persolino: from Neanderthal man of the Middle Palaeolithic Period (75000-40000 years ago) up to the VI century B.C., when populations of Etruscan culture erected a small temple here. It is possible to visit the perimetric walls of this temple discovered during surveys in 1959, along with other foundations dating back to Roman times.
In 1535 the Capuchin Friars founded a convent that is no longer present in the ancient site.
Furthermore, Persolino houses the National Professional Institute for Agriculture and Environment, an important study and research centre. Along the road leading to Errano it ispossible to visit Villa Emaldi, a 1700’s style building erected as a summer residence for the Count Emaldi of Lugo in 1860, absorbing the remains of a pre-existing ancient building.
The interior has maintained ancient decorations, with particularly valuable frescoes in the dining room and on the first level. The garden has the well-preserved neo-classical oratory and a neo-Gothic style greenhouse. The surrounding 6-hectare park was frequented by important persons such as D’Annunzio and Carducci, and is surrounded by century old trees with a "roccolo" (nets for hunting birds).
Additional notes: From the motorway exit, proceed along Via Granarolo direction Faenza centre. Turn right after the overpass and follow the signs for Brisighella. At the traffic lights in Via Canalgrande, proceed straight ahead for approximately 4 km along the state road 302 Brisighellese.
