Campiano

Tourist offices:

A village of the municipality of Castel Bolognese located along the road to Riolo Terme.

Description: Monte della Giovannina is situated near Campiano, it is a cone trunk single artificial mountain, which has been the subject of controversy for some time. On top of a hill, remains of Pieve di Sant’Angelo in Campiano (Church of Sant’Angelo), which dates back to 854, have been found. In Roman times Campiano was a residential area, the Pieve territory was extremely vast and included also the Bastia (stockade) and then the Castle. The importance of this church diminished when the castles of Castel Bolognese and Riolo were built. In 1374 the name "Pieve di Sant’Angelo" was removed from all documents and replaced with "Pieve di San Michele", the patron saint to which the church is still dedicated today. The Pieve di Sant’Angelo in Campiano has been the object of archaeological investigations that allowed to identify the lower Middle Ages stages of the building. From the remains we can see the apse, the foundations of the bearing columns of the nave and two aisles and the places of several altars. The presence of this church can be considered as proof of the existence of more or less numerous communities that used it not only for religious purpouses.
