Oriolo dei Fichi

Municipalities: Municipalities:Faenza
Tourist offices: I.A.T. Faenza

Itinerary: Inside the park from the main entrance where there is the farmer’s ex house that dates back to the end of the 1800’s and that has today been restructured and used as a small museum (the upper floor has displays of minerals, fossils and butterflies) and a visitor’s centre. The surrounding trees are mainly Volpina Pear trees and are a small but important example of fruit trees that once grew around the farm houses on the hills. In the back pathway that goes up diagonally to the tower it is possible to see the vegetation of the park, partly of an ancient man made park and partly natural. There are four monumental pine trees, an old multi stem bay leaf tree (in this case eight) and several fig trees. In addition right under the Tower is a rare example of azarole tree (the "pomo reale” of our grandparents grafted on a hawthorn plant. Then there are blackthorns (Prunus spinosa) which bloom in march-April, the “bishop’s biretta” (Euonymus europaeus) with its characteristic four lobe pink fruit (like the old priest’s caps) and eruca (Colutea arborescens), together with pansies, violets, "pan di biscia" and anemones. An interesting example of “Mediterranean garden” and finally the south slope, where in the past aromatic and medical plants such as rosemary, sage and pomegranate.
Additional information: Inside the park of Oriolo there is also the 1400’s fortress of which there are a few ruins (of the wall belt) buried under the vegetation and the imposing hexagonal plan Tower, which has been restored.

Access and requirements: Oriolo dei Fichi is about 7 km from Faenza. It is a small but quaint village with church, restaurant and a few homes and an overlying tower in the middle of a vast natural park area that occupies the top of the hill and that has been municipal property for years. The park is fenced off and open to the public normally on weekends in the summer and on public holidays, for meetings and guided tours and other initiatives especially in spring and summer. The surroundings are instead always open, some with marked trails.
