Address: Piazza Nicola da Castel Bolognese
Description:The National Monument in commemoration of Mine Clearers was inaugurated on April 15th 1984 with the presence of civil, military and religious authorities. Castel Bolognese was chosen as the place for the building of this monument for two reasons: the first because it was a town with vast areas of mine fields as the war raged for over four months, and the second because local authorities responded to the message launched by the survivors of the mine clearing operations. In the Castel Bolognese area thousands of mines were deactivated and many bombs were recovered. The monument is in commemoration of all those who between November 1944 and June 1948 generously gave their lives in Italy to bring back peace, security and work where war traps still demanded more blood. During the time there were around 4,500 men working for this purpose in Italy, of which 663 died, 168 mutilated and 699 were injured. The monument was designed by Erminio M. Ferrucci (architect), incharge of the construction and worked with a team of his collaborators M.G. Marziliano (architect) and D. Morini (engineer).
Directions: From Faenza on the via Emilia, turn left at the first set of traffic lights in Castel Bolognese. Follow viale Roma and after the curve on the right turn left into via Papa Giovanni XXIII. The monument is after a few hundred metres on the right.
