Explaination: In 1388 the City of Bologna wanting to strengthen its domain decided to enlarge an existing tower and build the fortress. The complex consisted of four corner towers (tha main tower is 22 m high). The work on the fortress started towards the end of 1388 and was finished in 1392. The existence of the fortress created conditions of economic development and urban concentration. The fortress also had to perform an important security function providing protection from frequent attacks from armed bands of raiders. The fortress therefore brought both greater prosperity and harmony to the area. The fortress was under the domain of Carlo Il Manfredi until 1472. It underwent a number of changes and restructuring work not always increasing its aesthetic qualities but retaining its grandiose beauty and safety. The Manfredi coat of arms can be found in the East part of the Fortress above the entrance to the towers. In one of the rooms a restored bombard is on show bearing the mark "Karolus S. de Manfredis - 1474". Inside the fortress there is an exhibit called the "bombarda della Rocca". The weapon is dated to 1474 and belonged to Carlo II Manfredi. It was probably a very modern piece of weaponry at the time used in 1474 to stop the advancement of the Spanish Lanzichenecchi.
The fortress passed to Girolamo Riario in 1481 husband of Caterina Sforza. After the death of her husband the Countess Caterina Sforza reigned, she herself died on May 28th 1509 at the age of 46. The great loyalty and popularity of Caterina Sforza is proven by the name of "Rocca Sforzesca", as the fortress was known for many centuries after her death.

Additional notes: The fortress host the Museum of the Faenza Apennines Landscape. Exhibitions, shows, musical entertainments, film projections, historical, cultural and gastronomic events are held here. Guided tours and laboratories are also available.
